Sementes Learning & Home Schooling Support

At Sementes we are building an innovative, regenerative Learning Community that believes in the power of transdisciplinary education to meet the diverse needs of children.

We want to enable them to think critically, work in collaboration with the community around them and have a positive impact on the bio-region in which they live.

That’s why we focus on offering regenerative, enriching, whole-child learning experiences that prepare them for the future.

In September 2025 we opened our doors to support families in Home Education (Home Schooling).

We know this road can feel lonely, so we work to make it a shared journey while creating evidence that can help integrate home-educated learners into the local school network.

What drives us and why?

We open our arms to diversity and inclusion

The current system struggles to meet the unique needs of students from diverse backgrounds or those on the margins (academic, socioeconomic, or cultural) perpetuating discrimination and bias.

We need to create a more inclusive and equitable learning environment where all students feel safe, supported, seen and valued.

We create opportunities for access to quality education

Lack of access to an empowering, quality education is a reality for many children, particularly those from rural or low-income communities.

It is essential to ensure access for everyone, regardless of their social background or the region where they live. This is what we are working towards, so that this proposal becomes part of the public school network.

We shift the focus from teaching to learning

The traditional model of teaching, in which the teacher stands in front of the group and lectures, may still work for some, but there are more and more children who find it difficult to learn in this kind of passive model of transmitting knowledge.

We need to create more active, personalized learning opportunities centered on the relationship each child builds with the environment around them.

We promote continuous learning and evaluation

The current system of standardized tests does not accurately measure children's knowledge or abilities. Just think of all the tests we took in our school days and what we've retained to date...

We need to create more authentic forms of assessment, which allow students to manage their individual progress and continually demonstrate the acquisition of knowledge and skills in a more meaningful way.

We prepare children for the skills of the future

Regenerative education aims to create a fairer and more sustainable world, not just to reproduce content. It is based on integral and systemic thinking, takes into account the interconnectedness of all living systems and encourages children to think critically and creatively. It also places a strong focus on learning based on community experience and incorporates elements of ancestral knowledge and ecoliteracy.

Recognizing that current systems are unsustainable, and believing that true sustainability begins with regeneration, we set out to create a regenerative learning community.

Our mission? To sow, in the village of Liteiros, an educational proposal that promotes personal, civic, and emotional development, placing at the center of the process the relationship between children/young people and all dimensions of the environment in which they live.

Transdisciplinarity

Through project-based learning, children come to understand the connections between various subjects, which makes learning more holistic, engaging and meaningful.

It also develops critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving skills, which are essential in the modern world.

Intergenerationality

We recognize the power of intergenerational learning, which is why we strive to involve the community in the learning process.

To facilitate this exchange of knowledge, activities such as sewing, carpentry and cooking are organized.

In return, the children will develop community projects, using their creativity and problem-solving skills to deal with some of the challenges the village is facing.

Interculturality

We foster cultural diversity and understanding through our library, which holds books in multiple languages and from varied cultural contexts, and through partnerships we plan to build with schools and communities worldwide that share our approach.

A calendar featuring major festivals and cultural events from around the world throughout the year helps foster a global perspective in children.

Regeneration

To educate is a living act. Learning grows through relationship. With others, with the land, and with each child’s own rhythm. We follow nature’s cycles and nurture real connections with the world we inhabit.

Children learn through movement, listening, creating, and caring. They take part in community life and develop essential human capacities such as empathy, autonomy, ecological awareness, and belonging.

Sociocracy

Sociocracy is a governance model based on consent decision-making, encouraging the active participation of everyone involved in the process.

Instead of top-down mandates or majority votes, sociocracy ensures that proposals move forward only after every voice is heard and the needs of each affected circle are considered.

FAQ

It is a living ecosystem where people, nature and projects grow together. Just as a forest regenerates the soil, this model nurtures curiosity, collaboration and care, respecting individual rhythms and the seasons.

We use our own Regenerative Education FrameworkWe go from the Essential Learning and the objectives of the national curriculum, then translate everything into projects, workshops, and practical challenges. The educational supervisor presents the results at the school where the student is enrolled.

Artists, musicians and other professionals from the community can also serve as mentors in specific workshops.

Homeschooling: A family member living with the child assumes the role of legal guardian. A bachelor’s degree in any field is required. Submit the application to a public or private school in the area, including: the enrollment form, a copy of the degree, a criminal background check and a study plan. The school will assign a teacher-tutor to oversee the process and enter into a contract with the legal guardian.

Individual Schooling: The family chooses a qualified teacher who will act as the educational guardian for their child. Proof of the teacher's qualifications and criminal record must be attached to the application. The school where the child is enrolled appoints a teacher-tutor to monitor the process and signs a contract with the guardian.

The outdoor area and the two learning workshops can accommodate up to 40 registered participants. On a daily basis, each child chooses between working individually, in pairs, or in small groups of up to five children, supervised by a tutor.

Whenever the weather permits, we all have lunch together outdoors on a covered terrace at the back of the school building.

On days with heavy rain or extreme heat, we use the multipurpose room, which everyone cleans up after the meal.

Children have free access to a variety of books, educational games, wooden and fabric materials, gardening tools, clay and the site’s natural ecosystem.

Evitamos materiais de plástico ou de fibras sintéticas sempre que possível, dada a ampla evidência dos riscos que estes materiais representam para a saúde (humana e ambiental).

Please wear comfortable clothing made from natural fibers, when possible, without prominent logos or children’s characters.
